Cross-Country and Snowshoeing in the
Mammoth Lakes, California Region
Twenty-five miles of groomed trails, actually
summer roads, wind around four of the dozen or more high Alpine lakes
for which the town of Mammoth Lakes is named. Tamarack Lodge,
760-934-2442; 800-237-6879, www.tamarack.com) a 75-year-old summer hunting
and fishing lodge now owned by Mammoth Mountain, maintains these trails
and charges $18 for access ($13 for ages 1017 and seniors; free
if younger than 9). The Lakes Basin includes many trail heads into the
backcountry, where no fee is charged. Rentals and lessons are available.
On weekends it's advisable to reserve. CCSAA member
Rock Creek Lodge (877-935-4170,
www.rockcreeklodge.com) in Mammoth Lakes
has 15 km of groomed trails for classic and skate skiing. Rentals and
lessons are available including telemark skiing. Rustic and modern cabins
located in the John Muir Wilderness. Guided or self-guided adventures.
