The Mohonk Mountain House (845/255-1000, www.mohonk.com) in New Paltz, NY less than two hours north of New York City has 50 km of groomed trails. The Mohonk Mountain House offers overnight guests, who visit this scenic location in the Shawangunk Mountains (also known as The Gunks, reputed to be a million years older than the Catskills) free use of xc ski and snowshoe equipment rentals. This resort is known for weekend getaways, romantic interludes and family reunions.

Cross country ski about 1.5 miles from the hotel rental shop and then climb the stone structure called the Sky Top Tower to a beautiful 360-degree vista of six neighboring states. Attendants are happy to advise about appropriate trails for xc skier levels. Lessons are available. Ice skating and tubing are also available to overnight guests.

Mohonk Mountain House is a 265 room Victorian castle on the Shawangunk Ridge. Now with an award-winning Spa, featuring 16 treatment rooms, an indoor heated pool, outdoor heated mineral pool, solarium, steam and sauna rooms, state-of-the-art fitness center, and yoga/motion room.
